Announcing registration for the Hawaii TESOL 2008 Annual Conference

Saturday, February 23, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Kapi‘olani Community College- ‘Ohi‘a Cafeteria and ‘Iliahi Buildings

This year’s conference theme is “Reading Connections”, and will feature a plenary address, an afternoon pedagogic workshop, posters, and numerous presentation sessions on this topic.

Dr. Richard Day of UH Manoa will begin the conference with an informative plenary address about the connections between reading fluency and comprehension.

Dr. Day will also lead the special afternoon pedagogy workshop on developing the reading fluency of ESL students.

At the request of past conference attendees, the conference will include two special sessions on employment for ESL professionals in Hawai‘i. The sessions will include brief presentations by many of Oahu’s ESL programs, poster displays from the ESL programs, and advice for developing your CV.

In addition, as a special feature to Hawaii’s DOE professionals, the conference will include a DOE sessions thread. Included in this thread is a presentation session by the current ESLL Teacher of the Year, Lori Murakami of Waipahu High School, and a forum on current issues for ESL professionals in the DOE.

* NOTE: DOE Resource Teachers and Lead Teachers, please contact the HITESOL Membership Secretary, Sarah Trask (trask@hawaii.edu), for purchase order information for groups of teachers within your complex.

You can also look forward to a full day of presentations, workshops, panels, and poster sessions by ESL professionals from Hawai'i, the mainland, and abroad. Enjoy browsing at the publishers' exhibits, catching up with colleagues, and making new contacts. Exciting prizes will be given away through the Hawai'i TESOL Travel Grant raffle, as well as the publishers' raffle at the end of the day. For a sneak peek at some of the top raffle items, please see www.hawaiitesol.org

Also, please look for the Call for Volunteers in your email inbox soon! Last year's conference at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa drew over 120 ESL professionals, and we expect an even bigger turnout this year. We will need an additional 10-15 volunteers to help make the conference a success.
